McNeil School to become Court?
There's an article in WMI Central here on the old School on McNeil. Seems that some folks don't want the place to become a Navajo County Court, because of the proximity to the Head Start Program, and an existing middle school.
"The city bought the abandoned school building in June 2002 for about $840,000. The city initially planned to use the property for a civic center. The facility at McNeil will hold both the Show Low Justice and Magistrate courts, which will move in on Nov. 1. On Dec. 4, the Navajo County Assessor, planning and zoning and engineering departments will also move in."
Hmmm...seems like a decent idea, to me. You can see from some of the pics I posted earlier, the place was run down and out of sorts. But some folks want nothing to do with the idea.
"...he said some of the people going to justice court will be drug users and child molesters just seeking to take care of a minor offense and they would be walking next to Head Start.
"Most of them have already been convicted once and they'll be there the second time," she said.
Atencio agreed that more serious offenders would go to justice court if they have minor charges.
"The court's prone to bringing people in that have issues with drugs," she said. "They have people that come in that are predators."
Noble added that there might be some people who could come into the court with a vendetta, which would endanger the people nearby. "There isn't a judge alive that doesn't have enemies."
So, can't the Court take care of whoever comes there? Surely there will be some sort of law enforcement hanging out.
And if Court is held there, then at least some good will come of the place.
I remember Mrs. Frost always meted out 'justice' if someone missed homework, or otherwise got out of line. Maybe the new Court can use some of the same style of thought and require offenders to at least be straight and clean when they show up. Keep Law Enforcement on hand while Court is in session. To not do that is crazy, IMHO. If someone shows up not properly dressed, or drugged/drunk, then said person should be escorted to a cell, cited for contempt.
It's never a good idea to allow the inmates to run the asylum...
